Third Annual CHA Christmas Carol Concert

Wednesday 12th December, St Johns Church, London, Waterloo

“What a success”

Our third annual concert attracted a diverse mix of over 200 Old Blues both from Hertford and Horsham with all generations from recent leavers and those with young families, through to Old Blues in their 80s.

The enthusiasm, passion and talent of our Master of Ceremonies, Adrian Bawtree, (LHA/Pe A 79–86) ensured that fun was the focus of the evening.

Music included the ever popular Twelve Days of Christmas, and the choir rose to the occasion with their performance of The Coventry Carol, and Sans Day Carol. The Old Blue version of The Twelve Days of Christmas is becoming a tradition at this event, although not all have managed the art of standing up and sitting down at the right time! (You have to come along to appreciate this particular rendition) However with the popularity of this event, we look forward to plenty more years of trying to get this right.

Readings by James Frecknall (Th A/Gr W 2000–2007), Georgia Garrod (current pupil) and Paddy Castledine (Mid B 76–83) added to the warmth and spirit of the occasion. Keith Lugton (Mid A 53–60) gave an inspiring reflection on the work of The Benevolent Society of Blues and the retiring collection raised over £800 for the charity’s work.

The new venue proved a great success and the church’s tireless work with its local community and homeless peoples, was synergistic with CH’s ethos. It was built in 1824 as part of the nation’s thanksgiving for the Victory of Waterloo—this coincidently matched the date of the founding of the BSB and CH’s own important navel links through the Royal Mathematical School.

Following the concert, everyone enjoyed a glass of warming mulled wine and mince pie, staying to chat and meet up with old friends.

Some comments received the new venue was an excellent choice; good proximity to choir; close to the station and easy to get to; acoustics were excellent; church was warm and comfortable and pillar free; just the right atmosphere.

Our thanks go to everyone who came along and also to Adrian Bawtree, for helping to make sure this was such a special CHA event. We hope you enjoy looking at the gallery photos* and that you join us next year!
