Old Blue Girls’ Sporting Club Hockey Match and CH Late Summer Ball September 2007

Old Blue Girls’ Sporting Club Hockey Match

On the 22nd September the Old Blues Ladies Sporting Club made history by playing their very first game as an Old Blues side against current pupils and staff.

A collection of Old Blues made it down for the game, leavers dating from 2000–2007. It was a wonderful opportunity for the younger ladies to play with senior players they would have once watched at Christ’s Hospital.

The game started with a “playing for fun attitude” but the rivalry soon emerged when the Old Blues went 1–0 up in the first half, showing some of the staff just how it should be done! The celebrations didn’t last for long as the staff and pupils came out to score early on in the 2nd half with a well-worked goal. With an ongoing battle occuring across the pitch the Old Blues shuffled several positions and managed to earn themselves the lead once again with a brilliant 2nd goal.

As the sun got hotter and the fatigue began to kick in it was clear the staff and pupils would have to pull something out of the bag to gather a draw in the game, in this case it was the dubious decision from the umpires rewarding the staff and pupils a rather suspect goal to even the match 2–2. With everyone having worked as hard as possible the umpires blew the final whistle and the well earned cheers sounded out. It was then off to the ball… Well done ladies.

Christ’s Hospital Late Summer Ball

The Late Summer Ball was an outstanding success and raised several thousand pounds for the Major School Sports Tour Fund to enable less financially able pupils to have the opportunity to tour and experience other countries. The event was a sell-out with many people from the Old Blue, School, and local communities in attendance.

The pupils helped support the excellent service and catering provided by Chartwells, and the music was provided by ‘London Soul’ who were a smash hit with the audience. Stephen Quest (Old Blue) was the lucky winner of two tickets to see Australia play England in Marseille in the Rugby World Cup!

Finally, I’m keen to emphasise that The Late Summer Ball will become an annual event, alongside a Sportspersons Dinner (scheduled for February 15th 2008), and it is hoped that the wider school community will support such a worthy cause in the years ahead.

Sean Davey, Chief Fund-Raiser for the Major Sports Tour Committee.
