CH Examination Results - notes

Christ's Hospital's focus on traditional academic subjects underpinned outstanding examination results in 2009.

At GCSE, pupils recorded the School's best ever results with 95% of all entries at A*, A or B grade and 80% of entries at A* or A grade. The Times placed Christ's Hospital 12th in its national rank of GCSE examination results for Independent Co-educational Schools.

A Level results were also excellent with an overall pass rate of 100%. 33 candidates (a quarter of the group) achieved three or more A grades.

GCSE Government Achievement and Attainment Tables

The fact that the Government does not officially accredit the IGCSE (International GCSE) qualification in either Mathematics or English (despite awarding it official status in other subjects) severely distorts the CH results in the West Sussex schools’ league table performance for 2009. All Christ’s Hospital pupils take IGCSE Mathematics, which automatically excludes them from any system counting, only A*-C passes in “standard” GCSE, since these measures usually insist on including Mathematics and English.

2009 CHOBA Carol Concert - review & photos

2009 CHOBA Carol Concert - review & photos

The fifth annual CHOBA Carol Concert took place on Thursday 17th December at the Church of St Andrew in Holborn. We had an excellent turn out with 120 guests and a choir of some 25 strong.

At 6pm prompt our Master of Ceremonies, Adrian Bawtree, called us to order and welcomed us to the concert. We started with an old favourite, O Come All Ye Faithful, to get everyone in the mood and following a reading by Andrew Howgego continued with the carols: Good King Wenceslas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The Twelve Days of Christmas and Hark, The Herald Angels Sing.
The programme also allowed for some choir solos, further readings by Rhiannon Fisher and Nick Angel and as befits a CH concert, the singing was of a very high standard.

Adrian Bawtree worked wonders with the choir in the very short rehearsal period and Peter Dutton did a fantastic job from the organ loft!.

We finished not, as in previous years, with much standing up and sitting down to “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, but instead to a rousing version of Hark, The Herald Angels Sing.

Following the hearty singing was the good cheer in the form of the mulled wine and mince pies and for many on to the pub for a few more!

A big thank you from the CHOBA Board to all who gave up their time to make this event happen, which makes this flagship event an opportunity for mingling, renewing old acquaintances, sharing anecdotes and memories and officially starting Christmas!

Photos from the evening are now available in the 2009 Carol Concert Photo Gallery

CH Experiences - share yours to help CH

CH Experiences - share yours to help CH

In our quest to raise awareness of Christ’s Hospital’s ethos to help us raise funds and communicate its valuable purpose to wide audiences, we are frequently asked for real-life examples of how CH has transformed lives. It would be enormously helpful to have at our fingertips, some Case Studies based on your experiences, that we can use to demonstrate this point and which you would be happy for us to use, either in conversation or in printed form.

If you are interested in helping us in this way, follow the link for more details, including some examples and a template to complete:-

CH School Inspection Reports

The Headmaster, John Franklin, writes:- "In September this year, Christ’s Hospital underwent its six-yearly inspection with inspection teams here from both the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and OFSTED. The ISI team scrutinised our pastoral care, general educational provision, governance, management and links to parents and the community, while the OFSTED team looked at our welfare provision. Copies of the two inspection reports can be found on both the CHOBA and school websites...."

40 Years-On-Reunion photos from 7th November 2009

40 Years-On-Reunion photos from 7th November 2009

We had a good turnout to the 40-Years-On reunion on 7th November, and we've received some great feedback, a selection of which is shown below. We've also uploaded photographs of the day, and these can be accessed within the

Photo Gallery for the reunion.

Some quotes from the day:-
"I thought that the occasion was a great success and many of those present expressed their appreciation of the way in which they were welcomed and entertained and given such in insight into life at Christ's Hospital in modern times, with inevitable comparisons with the situation forty years ago......."

"Thank you for making Saturday such an enjoyable day for us all, it was a real pleasure to meet old friends in such a welcoming environment, what a great school!"

"It was interesting to relive past memories but also to see the great changes that have come about at CH to make it the first class school that it undoubtedly is. Whatever our personal memories I think we all take a great pride in the school"

CHA name change to CHOBA

CHA name change to CHOBA

The CHA Board was constituted to comprise a good cross-section of the overall membership and has recently considered whether or not the name “Christ’s Hospital Association” was one with which Old Blues might readily identify, particularly younger Old Blues. After due consideration a proposal was put by the Board to the Council of Almoners who approved the name-change at their meeting on 17 September, effective from 1 October 2009. Hence the new name, which is intended to be inclusive of all Old Blues and other CHA members.

The Christ’s Hospital Old Blues’ Association (“CHOBA”) serves the wide community of those with a current or historical association with the school. Its key purpose continues to be maintaining Old Blue friendships and friendships between Old Blues and the school, fully representing all ages and geographical groupings.

The Board seeks to bring this Association to the notice of as many Old Blues as possible and to create the best forum for friend-raising in that community, to generate the best support and greatest interest in Christ’s Hospital today and to encourage and facilitate Old Blue-to-Old Blue interaction. The Board believes the change will allow the association to be recognized more easily by all those connected to CH.

Summer 2009 GCSE Results - another excellent year

Summer 2009 GCSE Results - another excellent year

Christ’s Hospital, pupils recorded their best ever results at GCSE level this year with a record 95% of all entries being at A*, A or B grade and 80% of entries at A* or A grade.

The overall pass rate at A*-C was 99% which is particularly pleasing given Christ’s Hospital’s focus on the more demanding academic subjects, modern languages and science.

45 pupils from a cohort of 109 obtained all A or A* grades.

The Head Master, Mr John Franklin was delighted with these results and said,
Our GCSE pupils have done very well this year and have given themselves an excellent academic foundation on which they can build a successful programme of study at A Level and beyond.”

We extend our congratulations to these pupils for their excellent grades and the hard work over the past year that went into them.”

Summer 2009 A Level results

Summer 2009 A Level results

Once again this year’s A Level results were outstanding, with an overall pass rate of 100%, an A/B pass rate of just under 76% and an average UCAS points total of 314 points per pupil.

No fewer than 33 candidates, which is nearly a quarter of the group, achieved three or more A grades at A Level, while Gabriel Eve and Tim Hennock both gained five A grades at A Level and consequently, places at Cambridge. Tim, who is from Barns Green, has regularly represented the UK in international mathematics competitions and gained the rare accolade of being offered an unconditional place at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Christ’s Hospital is confident that with the majority of its pupils gaining or exceeding their predicted grades, it will continue to maintain its proud tradition of sending well over 90% of its leavers to top universities in the UK and abroad.

The Head Master, John Franklin said “These fine results are the culmination of a great deal of hard work by our pupils and their teachers. In such uncertain times, it is reassuring to know that so many of the pupils leaving Christ’s Hospital this year have secured a place at a good university.”
