Habib Annous (Pe B 74–81) was appointed in April to manage Merrill Lynch’s £110 million Recovery unit trust. He was previously in charge of their £60 million UK Smaller Companies unit trust.
Terry Benson (Th A 62–67) joined Michael Page, ‘the world’s leading executive recruitment specialists’, in 1979. He was appointed to the Board in 1983 and was promoted in 1986 to Managing Director of the Group’s marketing recruitment businesses and in January 1988 to Managing Director of the Group. Since 1990 he has been Group Chief Executive.
Mark Blythe (Pe A 77–84) is a founding director of GTI Specialist Publishers, based in Wallingford, near Oxford. Set up while Mark was at Reading University, GTI publishes targeted careers titles for undergraduate and postgraduate students across Europe and has a staff of seventy. There are over 65 GTI titles on paper and web including www.doctorjob.com. Mark is married with three children.
Professor Steven Connor (Mid B 66–71) has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship. He is working on a cultural history of skin.
Benjamin Cowderoy (CH 1821–26), founding father and first mayor of the town of St Kilda in Victoria, Australia, has been given a belated memorial there. A plaque commemorating him and his descendants was unveiled in March in St Kilda General Cemetery, where he lies in an unmarked grave.
Sir Colin Davis (Th B 38–44) was made a Companion of Honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Jeremy Dawson (La A B, LA 87–94) is a statistician with the Organisation Studies Group at Aston University. He took a First in mathematics at Durham, followed by an MSC in statistics at Sheffield, where he was awarded the Gani Prize for best overall performance and sang in the choir of Sheffield Cathedral.
Cdr Simon Gillespie (Col A 70–77) is Director of Operations at the Charity Commission.
Norah Gurney (née Dewar 5’s 33–39), who died in 1974, is commemorated by the Gurney Library at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, York, where she was archivist-in-charge and then director.
The Rev John Hall–Matthews (Horsham Assistant Chaplain 65–72) has been appointed a Prebendary of Lichfield Cathedral.
Philippa Harpin (née Barr, 3’s 50–56, Governor) received the Independent Living Industry Award 2000 for her book The Adaptations Manual. The award, sponsored by emap Healthcare, is given to a product that enables and encourages users to be more independent.
Mike Hewitt (La A 72–78) is a sports photographer with the Allsport picture library, excelling in rugby and cricket. In 1996 he won both the Olympic Media Award and the Silver Lens IOC competition. He has since been runner-up for Nikon Sports Photographer of the Year (1997) and highly commended in the Sports England Awards (1998). He names Gerald Davies (Horsham Staff 70–74) among his sporting heroes.
Steve Hilton (Ma A 81–83, LA 83–86) is a partner in Good Business Ltd and a member of the Council of ‘no’ , the campaign against Britain adopting the Euro.
The Rev Canon Walter King (Ma A B 56–63) was installed on 12 June as Vice–Dean and Canon Pastor of Chelmsford Cathedral.
Sir Christopher Leeds (Horsham Staff 72–75) is a visiting research fellow at the University of Kent at Canterbury, in the Department of Politics and International Relations.
Christopher ‘Des’ Lockyer (Mid B 68–75) is to marry his Brazilian fiancée Ana-Lucia on 29 December.
Annabelle Mark (née Parfitt, 3’s, 5’s 63–69) has been appointed Professor of Healthcare Organisation at Middlesex University.
Malcolm McKelvey (Director of Music 62–85, Governor) is director of music at St Mary’s Church, Prestbury, on the outskirts of Cheltenham.
Howard W Medwell (Pe B 59–66) contested Edmonton for the Socialist Alliance at this year’s General Election.
Graham Mellstrom (Mid A 41–48, Governor) contested Hampshire North East for the United Kingdom Independence Party at this year’s General Election.
York Membery (La A B 73–80) married his Brazilian girlfriend Junia Pereira da Silva at Chelsea Register Office on 15 September. The reception was held at the Black Lion in Hammersmith. Old Blues present were Mark Barnes and his brother Nick Barnes, Robin Durrant, Ian Taylor and Pete Worthington. Ron Lorimer (Horsham Staff 58–92) was unfortunately unable to attend because of injury.
Chris Moller (Pe A 63–70) is a freelance telecoms consultant, specialising on telecoms for the oil industry. He has recently been working under contract to Worldcom, migrating BP’s networks throughout Europe on to Worldcom infrastructure and into Worldcom management. His current project is developing the overall strategy and design for a major upgrade to BP’s UK Onshore Wide Area Network.
The Rev Geoffrey Morgan (La A B 70–76) is Academic Tutor at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, and is also Taught Programmes Courses Manager in the OCMS International Masters Programme.
Tony Ray–Jones (Col B c. 50–59), the photographer who died in 1972, is commemorated by a plaque at his London home, 102 Gloucester Place, supplied by Westminster City Council and the Royal Photographic Society.
Bill Richards (Pe B 61–70, Governor) is Senior Partner elect of Lawrence Graham Solicitors.
Jonathan ‘Baz’ Sheehan (Ba A 78–86) heads the City office team of headhunters Abbeywood, dealing with the majority of the City financial institutions and many e-commerce clients.
Dr Caiti Steele (5’s, 8’s, CB 80–87) is on the research staff of the Geology Department of Southampton University.
Paul Uwemedimo (Pe A 75–83) was ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church on 29 October and is now finishing his training for the priesthood in the Philippines, where for some time he has been living and working among the poor in squatter/slum areas in Manila. At present he spends half his time in the slums and half in the seminary, but when he becomes a priest he expects to be once more living full-time among the poor. He is setting up a number of projects, ‘education, housing, etc., as well as specifically “religious” ones.’
Andrew Watson (Th B 66–73) is a partner in the law firm Denton Wilde Sapte, specialising in corporate and commercial law, with particular emphasis on PFI.
Richard Wickison (Pe B 64–71) is the manager in Stockport of the mental health charity MIND. He writes: “I had a breakdown eight years ago and was out of action for two years. I have been working for MIND for six years now, having decided not to go back to IT (I had been at ICL for around six years prior to that). MIND had helped me when I was ill so I decided to try and give something back. I have been married twice and have three children, a son aged 21, a daughter aged nineteen and another son aged three! Michael Wintle (Mid A 62–70) is now Professor of European History at the University of Hull.
Nicholas Wolstenholme (Th A 90–97) passed out of Sandhurst in August and has been granted a commission in the Royal Logistic Corps.
The Rev Joanna Yates (1’s, 2’s 59–66) has been appointed Precentor of Leeds Parish Church.
