HRH Princess Alice, widow of Henry, Duke of Gloucester (President 37–74), and mother of Richard, Duke of Gloucester (President 74– ), celebrated her hundredth birthday on Christmas Day. On 13 December she made a rare public appearance at Kensington Palace, accompanied by the Queen and (the last time she was seen in public) Princess Margaret.
Duncan Barraclough (Ma A/B 85–92) is educational tours manager of Equity School Travel, based in Brighton.
Su Bonfanti (5’s 67–73), head of Urban Policy 1 Division at the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions, was made an OBE in the New Year Honours.
Sub–Lt J F Causton (CH 90s) passed out of Britannia Royal Naval College on 20 December.
John Cugley (Pe A 64–73) and his family have moved to Scotland and are now established in a lovely Victorian house on the edge of Loch Awe. He continues to work for the Woolwich as in-house lawyer.
Ruth Deech (Fraenkel, 7’s 53–61) spoke at the Woman of the Year Luncheon and Assembly at the Savoy in October on “A Pandora’s Box: the controversy of human cloning.”
Mark Dickinson (La A 67–72) stepped down in August as HM Ambassador to Macedonia and has taken up a new post at the Weatherhead Centre for International Relations at Harvard University. He was appointed OBE in 2000.
Professor Robin Du Boulay (Pe B 31–38) recently moved to Basingstoke from Yorkshire.
Lt–Col John Dymoke (Col B 37–43) retired on January 1st as Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. In October he received Princess Alexandra when she opened a new sports centre in that county.
Andrew George (La A 65–72) is Professor of Babylonian at London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies, and head of the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near and Middle East.
The Rev Preb John Hall–Matthews (Horsham Assistant Chaplain 65–72) has retired as Rector of St Peter’s Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton, and is moving to Craven Arms, Shropshire.
Tanya Heasman (2’s 76–83) has twice been elected to the Council of Management of the Consumers’ Association.
Ian Henderson (Ma A, MB 89–96) entered Southampton University to read Geography, switched to Computer Science and emerged last summer with a high 2:1, having served for two years as President of the university chess club.
Alice Holdsworth (LHB, Col A, Gr W 94–01) and Alice Wheeler (Col A, Gr W 94–01) are currently spending six months in Kenya.
Matthew Holdsworth (CH ?92–99) is studying geography at Exeter University.
Robert Iles (Pe A 66–73) is technical director of DynamicListing.com.
Professor Ian Johnson (La A B 59–66) is head of the School of Human Development at Nottingham University.
Martin Linton MP (Th A 54/5–62) is parliamentary private secretary to the arts minister, Baroness Blackstone.
C E Llewellin (CH 90s) passed out of Sandhurst in December and has been granted a commission in the Royal Logistic Corps.
The Rev Bruce Lyons (Th A 49–54) is now chaplain of Milton Abbey School.
Rosalind Malcolm (5’s 67–73) is Surrey University’s Director in Law.
Susan Mitchell (née Hamilton, 7’s 47–56, Treasurer 96– ) has been appointed a Trustee and Chairman of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
David Orpwood (Ba A, Th B 62–70) is a sheep and pig farmer in Oxfordshire but because of the problems of the past four years is moving into a marketing venture, putting local produce into the supermarket aisle. He is in his second term as chairman of Berks, Bucks and Oxon NFU.
Simon Palgrave (La A B, MA, Grecians East 93–01) was studying software engineering at Staffordshire University but is now working for United Services Ltd before going to Glamorgan University to study network management and security.
Dr Clive Roberts (Col A 63–70), Curator of Fishes at the Museum of New Zealand, is the leader of a major Foundation for Research Science and Technology grant-funded project to survey, describe and classify the fish fauna of the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (the fourth largest in the world) and to increase understanding of its origins and relationships. This research is discovering a new species every two to three weeks.
Lord Simon of Highbury (Mid A 50–58, Senior Grecian, Governor & Almoner) is a member of a high-powered committee chaired by the former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing, assembled by the global ratings agency Fitch to advise it on “issues that matter”. In November he was guest of honour at the Anglo-Belgian Society’s annual dinner.
David Stone (Mid A 67–74) is on the editorial board of Health Care Risk Report (Eclipse/Butterworth Tolley) and is a part time Deputy District Judge on the South Eastern Circuit.
Ben Todd (Mid A 84–91) is showbusiness editor of The Daily Star and Express Group.
Ollie Williams (LHA, Th A 79–86) is one half of the artistic duo “Olly and Suzi” who have an installation of photography, film, painting and drawing, Olly and Suzi Untamed, running at the Natural History Museum until 6 May. During the exhibition they are working with the Museum’s scientists, naturalists and research biologists as artists-in-residence.
