Changes in the CHA Board and a new chairman.

Changes in the CHA Board and a new chairman.

Departures from the CHA Board

Having led the CHA as Chairman of the Board for the past 3 years, Steve Webb (Coleridge A '60–'69) has now stepped down from the Board. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve for his commitment and leadership over the past 3 years, and for all his commitment to CH and its various organisations.

Rebecca Ramsay-Smith (Leigh Hunt B, Grecians East '99–'01)has also had to step down from the Board due to personal circumstance and commitments.

Carol Stevens (née Rayson, 3's '59–'65) has been with the CHA Board as the Almoners' representative since its inception. Having completed her term as an Almoner, she has also relinquished her role on the board. Carol was instrumental in the establishment of the CHA and the transition from the CH Club. We are most grateful to Carol for all her wise steering and advice over the past years.

Our new Chairman of the CHA Board

With Steve stepping down, we're pleased to announce that
Adrian Bawtree (Leigh Hunt A, Peele A '79–'86, CH Staff) has been elected as the new Chairman of the CHA Board. Adrian has been on the Board as the Headmaster's Representative since the start of the CHA, and applied to join the Board as a full member when the recent vacancies arose. Given both his close contact with the school and his continuing involvement in the CHA, he was proposed and accepted as the new Chairman. We look forward to his leadership, and continuing to build even closer ties between the CHA and the School.

New CHA Board Members

With Carol Stevens' departure as Almoners' Representative, we are pleased to welcome
Clare Tattersall (Hertford 1s & 8s '63–'71) as our new Almoners' Representative.

Also, following the recent adverts in the Old Blue and on the website for applications for new CHA Board Members, we're very pleased to announce the following additions to the board:-

  • Nick Angel, (Barnes A, Thornton A/B '81-'88)
  • Andrew Howgego, (Barnes A, Thornton A '66-'73)
Further details will be added shortly to the CHA Board page.

Full details of the CHA Board can be found in the Contacts page of the website, on the CHA Board page.

2008 CHA Carol Concert

2008 CHA Carol Concert

The fourth annual CHA Carol Concert took place on Wednesday 10th December at St John’s Church, Waterloo. We had an excellent turn out with 200 guests and a choir and band 25 strong.

At 6pm prompt our Master of Ceremonies, David Eastburn, called us to order and welcomed us to the concert. We started with an old favourite, Once in Royal David's City, to get everyone in the mood and following a reading by Richard Poulton continued with the carols: Unto us a Son is Born, The First Noel and O Little Town of Bethlehem.
The programme also allowed for some choir solos, a further reading by Kate Atkinson and as befits a CH concert, the music was of a very high standard.

Linden Innes Hopkins worked wonders with the choir in the very short rehearsal period and Dean Ryan did a fantastic job with his ability to sprint from the piano at the front of the church up into the organ loft at the back between choir and congregation pieces.

We finished not, as in previous years, with much standing up and sitting down to “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, but instead to foot stamping as we demanded figgy pudding in the final verse of “We wish you a Merry Christmas”.

Following the hearty singing was the good cheer in the form of the mulled wine and mince pies and for many onto All Bar One for a few more!

A big thank you from the CHA to all who gave up their time to make this event happen, which makes this flagship event an opportunity for mingling, renewing old acquaintances, sharing anecdotes and memories and officially starting Christmas!

Photos from the evening are now available in the Photo Gallery

Message about CHA Manager from the Acting Clerk, Tony Hogarth-Smith

Message from the Acting Clerk, Tony Hogarth-Smith

Michelle Sutlieff will leave her role of CHA Manager in mid-January in order to take up a Marketing role as a Brand Manager with a company based in Horsham. Michelle came to us with a great deal of marketing and brand management experience in commercial companies and will be returning to and progressing in that career.

In the short time she has been with us Michelle has made a considerable impact. Hard working, tolerant of the many individual foibles that have presented themselves to her and above all a good organiser, she has worked well with the Board and kept a vitality to the many events and activities, aided by the supportive strengths of Wendy Killner.

I am sorry to see Michelle depart but congratulate her on her new appointment; I am sure that all of us connected to the CHA will wish her well for the future.

As to what happens next, I am aiming to join a meeting of the Board to review the post prior to seeking a new recruit.

The Lord Mayor’s Show

Report by Mortimer Pockett, Grecian

“The pupils of Christ’s Hospital got onto a coach in the early hours of Saturday morning, 8th November, for the trip to London. We were all ready for the long day ahead of us and everyone was excited to take part in this annual show once again. The event itself is nearly 800 years old; it has taken place nearly every year and did not even stop because of the Blitz or Black Death. It was also impressively the first event to be broadcast on television.

“This year, 151 organisations took part in the three mile march but the CH Band was in pride of place in the middle of the official coaches carrying some of London’s most important people. We played marches such as ‘The Contemptibles’, ‘Blaze Away’ and ‘Army and Marine’ and everywhere we could hear cries of ‘Come on Christ’s Hospital!’ from Old Blues and fans of the School. It seems that everywhere Housey goes there are people who recognise the unique school uniform and exceptional Band.

Even the Lord Mayor stood and applauded as the Band marched past, showing the strong relationship CH has with the City of London.

“It has been a privilege to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show for six years. Every year has been different and enjoyable. I was hoping that my last Lord Mayor’s Show would be memorable; due to the appalling weather I do not think I will forget it at all!”

ARMISTICE DAY AT CHRIST’S HOSPITAL

ARMISTICE DAY AT CHRIST’S HOSPITAL

Over 1500 pupils, staff and Old Blues at Christ’s Hospital School, marked Armistice Day and the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One with a special Service linked to Remembrance Sunday. Wreathes were laid with prayers and the sounding of The Last Post and two minutes silence. The address was by Sir Garry Johnson KCB OBE MC DSc (Hon), Treasurer of Christ’s Hospital.

The CHA were delighted to have over 50 Old Blues and guests come along to this service, many of whom have/have had a military background since leaving CH.

The Service took place in front of the War Memorials at the School. Over 3,000 Old Blues fought for their country and 370 died during this conflict, named on the memorial tablets, including two who were awarded the Victoria Cross. A group of Old Blues, known as ‘The Feast of Five’ were reunited when commissioned into the Royal Sussex Regiment. They enjoyed a meal together when on leave just before the Battle of Passchendaele; two subsequently lost their lives. One survivor was Lieutenant Edmund Blunden, poet and author of the ‘Undertones of War’.

Following the Service at the School, hundreds of poppies were placed by pupils, staff and visitors in the Quadrangle.

The Service was just one of the events Christ’s Hospital has organised over the past months to mark the 90th year. In October, the School’s Band was greatly honoured to perform at The Menin Gate, Belgium and pupils visited the Ypres War Graves. In a cross-curricular project, the History, Music, English, Art and Drama Departments drew together the School’s connections with WW1 in an exhibition of memorabilia from the School’s museum, as well as paintings, poetry, musical compositions by the pupils who imagined themselves in the place of one of the Old Blue soldiers and a dramatic enactment of the experience of war, both from the front and at home, inspired by the letters of Vera Brittain and her correspondents.

More photographs from this day are available in the events gallery.

CH are featured in BBC Radio 4 Programme

During the Band's visit to the Menin Gate in October, a recording was made of a programme for BBC Radio 4 which will be broadcast on Remembrance Sunday at 11.45am (can also be accessed via BBC iPlayer).

The programme starts with the CH Band, followed by interviews with young people, including CH pupils, about the Great War.

Radio 4 'The Menin Gate' synopsis:-

Mark Whitaker reports from the Menin Gate in the Belgian city of Ypres, a symbol of remembrance that, some 90 years after WWI, still has the power to affect visitors deeply.

The Last Post has been played there by local buglers every night since 1929, except during WWII, and it is the most visited site on the Western Front. The imposing memorial arch lists the names of over 50,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who fell in the Great War and have no known grave.

Middleton Reunion 2008 -Wednesday 8th October

Middleton Reunion 2008 -Wednesday 8th October

Wednesday 8th October was a glorious day. The sun shone from morning till night and helped to make the Middleton reunion a great success with Old Blues from many parts of the world.

Middleton was the last Avenue block to be renovated and the first to benefit from the spacious and modern family ‘Townhouse with private garden’ concept of houseparents accommodation. The simultaneous reunions in Mid A and Mid B celebrated this renaissance of Middleton. In the morning, those present were taken around the boarding house and the houseparents accommodation, witnessed the unveiling of plaques by CH Treasurer Sir Garry Johnson, himself a Mid A Old Blue, to commemorate the development and then took part in group photographs.

The assembled gathering then saw a magnificent Lunch Parade. The Band, which had only returned a few hours earlier from an outstanding contribution to the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, marched past and saluted the Treasurer, the Head Master and the Clerk who were accompanied in front of Dining Hall by Keith Lugton and Michael Bamford as standard bearers for Mid A and Mid B respectively.

This, the largest reunion held at CH, consisted of 48 Old Blues from Mid A and 45 from Mid B, who had all entered the school by 1965. Together with 45 supporters and guests, around 140 people sat down to lunch in Big School. After explanations of how the Middleton houseparents accommodation had been funded and other aspects of the current Christ’s Hospital, the Treasurer, the Head Master and the Clerk answered questions from the audience.

Then Lance Reynolds, Mid B Old Blue and treasurer/secretary of the Friends of Christ’s Hospital in America, presented to CH a copy of Ackermann’s Public Schools, a vast book published in 1816 which contains wonderful pictures of the main public schools of that time (including Christ’s Hospital – described as a free-school) and a write-up of each. This will form the centrepiece of a special display in the Library.

The visitors were then free to visit other parts of the school, including the Art School and the Doyle School of Design and Technology, funded by the Doyle family and opened by Jack Doyle, Mid A Old Blue, last year.

Grateful thanks were expressed to all the CH staff who had made it possible to have such a successful reunion.

The party then attended a short chapel service. The lesson (Rejoice in the Lord always from Philippians chapter 4) was read by Susan Mitchell, who as Treasurer of CH in 1998 was closely involved in the successful Mid A appeal at that time. The homily by Rev Muna Mitra in his last reunion service before leaving CH was most uplifting and reflected the volume of the singing by the congregation, accompanied on the organ by current Mid A pupil Adam Matthias.

The gathering dispersed after tea in Dining Hall and the Court Room, only for many to find themselves meeting again at the Boar’s Head (formerly the Fox and Hounds) to celebrate a hugely enjoyable day.

Photographs taken by the CHA Office during the Middleton Event can be viewed here. Should you wish to add your own personal photographs of the day to this gallery please send them into the The CHA Office.

90th Anniversary of WW1 - the Old Blue Roll of Honour

90th Anniversary of WW1 - the Old Blue Roll of Honour

As we draw towards the 90th anniversary of World War One, we are delighted that we can share David Miller's (LaB 1948-55) work on the involvement of Old Blues in WW1, available on the CHA Website until 1st December 2008.

In 2005, David started to look into the involvement of Old Blues in World War One. He started with the “Record of Service” and the “Roll of Honour” published by the Counting House in December 1920, which listed all known Old Blues who had served in and died as a result of their recently-concluded war. His first step was to compare these two documents to the names listed on the Dining Hall War Memorial (DHWM) and discovered that there were several differences.

This led David to review every name by comparing the names in the Christ’s Hospital records with official documents and deeper research where necessary into names where there were major discrepancies.

This has resulted in a far more detailed and accurate Roll of Honour (along with a set of Guidance notes) which can be
viewed in this article.

Any queries or questions regarding this piece of work, please forward them to the CHA Manager.

Christ's Hospital Foundation announces resignation of Clerk

Christ's Hospital Foundation announces resignation of Clerk

Christ’s Hospital Foundation has announced that its Clerk and Chief Executive, Paul Tuckwell will be leaving the charity in November.

During his time at Christ’s Hospital Mr. Tuckwell, a former senior banker in the City of London, guided the Foundation through the initial period of substantial change in its governance and organisational structure and introduced a simplified committee structure for the trustee body. He has been instrumental in establishing a new Medium Term Financial Plan and led the initial stage of an ongoing review of the Foundation's Investment Strategy.

Thanking Mr. Tuckwell for his contribution, the Treasurer of Christ’s Hospital said:

"Paul has helped us enormously by leading some key reforms using the skills he gained from his financial background. He now feels that it would more appropriate for a new appointee to take on the implementation phase of the Plan he helped create. We wish him the very best in his next endeavours".

Help needed to research Rugby memorabilia

A New Zealand Old Blue has obtained a vintage piece of Old Blues RFC memorabilia from 1930. It is a 1930 Farewell Supper Menu for H H McCleery on the eve of his departure to the wilds of Tanganyika, held at the Bedford Head Hotel, Maiden Lane, The Strand, London WC2 on 3rd July 1930. It has been signed on the back by 25 guests from the supper, probably old players.

Does anyone know any details of players list's from that era?

Some of the signatures are Paul Osborne, K Oliver, R J Rogers, W Weeks, M Payne, A Bennett, S Wales and S Reed.

Christ's Hospital A-Level Results

Christ's Hospital A-Level Results

Once again this year’s Christ's Hospital A Level results were outstanding, with an overall pass rate of 99%, an A/B pass rate of 73% and an average UCAS points total of 325 points.

No fewer than 28 candidates, which is nearly a quarter of the group, achieved three or more A grades at A Level. Of particular note were Rosa Blaus, who gained five A grades and Ralph Hick, Edward Hudson, Dean Ryan and Helen Talbot (from Horsham) who achieved 4 A grades.

Also amongst the top performing candidates were Duncan Evans (AAAAC), Harry Dadswell (AAAB), Christopher Hockey (AAA), William Warman (AAA) and Matthew Phillips (from Horsham with AAA), who have all won places at Cambridge.

The Head Master, Mr John Franklin, said, “I am delighted with these results and very proud that the vast majority of our boys and girls have, through their own hard work and the support of their teachers, gained grades that will allow them to move on to exciting and fulfilling careers in the wider world.”

In recent years well over 90% of Christ’s Hospital pupils have progressed to their first choice of university and indications are that this will again be the case, with most pupils taking up places at Russell Group universities in this country or at good universities in the USA.

Return visit to the 'Forgotten Blues' exhibition at Hertford Museum

Return visit to the 'Forgotten Blues' exhibition at Hertford Museum

Hertford Old Blues are planning a return visit on Saturday the 2nd of August to the 'Forgotten Blues’ Exhibition at Hertford Museum (Hertford Museum, 18 Bull Plain, Hertford, Hertfordshire SG14 1DT)

.

The 'Forgotten Blues' exhibition tells the story of the school that existed in Hertford for over 300 years. The exhibition illustrates the development of the school, from its early origins in 1552 in London, to the eventual move to the home counties and in particular—to Hertford in the late 17th century—which eventually became the home of the girl’s school.

This return visit is open to ALL former Hertford Old Blues, but there has been a particular drive to attract back former members of Houses 2 and 5. People intend to turn up at the Museum late morning, adjourning in groups to lunch somewhere close by. Those who are staying into the evening will probably meet up again, somewhere like Café Rouge. Please note as this is not a ‘formal’ or 'organised' event, no arrangements have been made for access to the buildings on the school site in Hertford.

Old Blues Day 2008 - summary and photos

Old Blues Day 2008 - summary and photos

We were pleased to welcome back over 300 Old Blues and their guest's to Christ's Hospital last Sunday. We were very lucky with the weather which allowed the tradition of picnics to take place around the campus.

The day started with a welcome from Head Master John Franklin, who gave an update on Christ's Hospital in its current format and his appreciation at seeing so many Old Blues return for Old Blues Day.

As we exited Big School the band struck up with Beating Retreat, which many watched around the Quad.
Dining Hall welcomed over 200 Old Blues for lunch where Old Blues were reacquainted at tables set out by decade and seperately for those that attended Hertford - I'm reliably told by many Old Blues the food was the best yet at Old Blues Day.

After lunch we filed out for the afternoon activities which included visits to the Museum, Art & Technology Dept, Library, Middleton A and Thornton A boarding houses, Theatre and Old Blue Girls and Boys Sporting activites. The afternoon visits down 'The Tube' proved very popular and we had to lay on extra tours.

The day was perfectly ended with a tea accompanied by Grecians and the Special Joint Evensong for School and Old Blues in Chapel.

It was lovely to see so many Old Blues of different ages and backgrounds and many brought their families back to the School for the first time, a selection of views of the day we received back from Old Blues the following morning is below;

"May I add my thanks to you, to those of the Headmaster, for the organistion of Old Blues Day. My children and grandchildren had a thoroughly enjoyable day, and were very, very impressed with the School. Looking back, I cannot believe how lucky I was to have gone to Housey - and I have a long way to look back.

"The Beating Retreat rehearsal and lunch in Dining Hall were both excellent. It was a great treat to be back in the old Dining Hall. The School Museum, CDT and Art School exhibitions were all superb and the trip down the Tube was very interesting. We even managed to pop in to the Theatre to see the drama workshop and it has certainly inspired us to visit again and see some future school productions. The day was rounded off perfectly with the evening Chapel service."

"Can I thank you all for making yesterday a really good and memorable Old Blues Day. Everyone I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed the day and I know that for a number of Old Blues, this was the first time for many years that they had been back to Horsham... And it was a very positive experience!" Steve Webb, CHA Chairman.

A photo gallery is now avaliable to view photographs of the day - if you took any further photographs and are happy to let us have digital copies of these, please do send them through to manager@chassociation.org. We would also love to hear of any anecdotes and stories from the day.

Many thanks to all those who attended Old Blues Day and made it such a joyful occasion.

Launch of the Christ's Hospital Walking & Countryside Club!

Launch of the Christ's Hospital Walking & Countryside Club!

The CHA in association with Nick de Mattos (BaB, LaB 66-73) are delighted to launch the Christ's Hospital Walking and Countryside Club.

The aims of the CHWCC:

To provide an opportunity once a term for busy, city-bound Old Blues to take to the country for a weekend’s walking.

To provide a possible opportunity to start a group donation governorship scheme to enable others to enjoy the advantages of Christ’s Hospital.

Who can join?

Just about anybody, in fact, even though it is aimed specifically at Old Blues in cities. Members would have to be able to walk three or four miles at a stretch.

What about children?

Welcome, but must remain strictly under the control of the parents. This aspect makes the CHWCC the only family-orientated club in the Old Blue network. Again, it must be possible to take the children on a walk of three or four miles at a stretch.

What places will be visited?

Being a ‘countryside’ club means that it is interested in all aspects of the country. However, this doesn’t mean endless museums of farm implements. The emphasis will be on the live countryside – both managed and natural. The club is a young shoot from the grand old stump of the Old Blues’ Agricultural Club, so farms are of particular interest.

What equipment will be needed?

Good walking boots are recommended, but it probably wouldn’t be necessary to equip the entire family!

A basic waterproof coat – a kagool will do.

A small, light backpack.

Who can I bring?

Anyone, provided at least one of you is a paid-up member and that all are capable of walking 3 or 4 miles at a stretch. Whether dogs or not will depend very much on your accommodation.

Where would we be staying?

Depending on numbers, accommodation would either be arranged, or a list sent of local accommodation for you to arrange for yourself.

How much would it cost?

We would ask for an annual subscription of £15 per family to cover administrative costs. If the subscriptions exceed needs, we could either reduce them, or subsidise trips, or add them to a Donation Governorship Fund. The weekends would cost an average of c£50 per person based on:

Travel = £5.00

Accommodation (one night + breakfast) = £20.00

Visit = £7.00

Evening meal on Sat night = £15.00

We are committed to keeping costs as low as possible.

INTERESTED? - email n.demattos@btinternet.com or manager@chassociation.org for more information and to register your interest

Old Blues Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper just sailed into Sydney harbour on 9th May, having successfully completed their 22,000 mile Pole-to-Pole journey

OLD BLUE EXPLORERS JOURNEY ENDS

At just 19, Old Blues Rob Gauntlett and James Hooper became the youngest Brits to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest on May 17th 2006. They have now just sailed into Sydney harbour (9th May) having successfully completed their 22,000 mile Pole to Pole journey.

The objective of their expedition "180 Degrees - Pole to Pole" was to become the first people to travel using only human and natural power from the North to the South Pole. The purpose of the expedition was to experience and relate to others the effects that global warming was having on the planet.

Travelling 22,000 miles using only renewable resources and their own energy, they have experienced temperatures from -50 degrees C to 50 degrees C as they crossed the globe. On the way they could see the recession of the Arctic ice cap happening and the early melt of areas once permanently ice capped.

Rob, 20, and James, who turned 21 during the trip, and the crew of the yacht on which they have sailed the final leg arrived at the Geomagnetic South Pole on Thursday 24th April. (The crew on this final leg also included Charlie Berenger, also an Old Blue). This was the official end point of their journey.

Speaking of their achievements, Head Master of Christ's Hospital, John Franklin said:

"Christ’s Hospital has been very proud of Rob and James's achievements and their initiative to draw attention to such an important issue as climate change. We wish to congratulate them on successfully completing their journey which is yet another phenomenal achievement".

Further photos, and a letter from the guys, are available in the Old Blues Gallery

Details of Rob and James's trip may be found on www.180degrees.co.uk

Hertford Girls return to Hertford for the 'Forgotten Blues' Exhibition

Hertford Girls return to Hertford for the 'Forgotten Blues' Exhibition

60 to 70 Hertford Old Blues attended the 'Forgotten Old Blues' exhibition at Hertford Museum. CHA Board Member and Hertford Old Blue Jane Rennie commented:

"It was great seeing so many people, some who were on your Christmas Card List (!) and some who hadn't been back since they left"

After touring the exhibition which had lots of memorabilia which had never been seen before, a selection of Old Blues went on to Lunch including Jane Cottage (1's), Anna Swan (3's), Lynda Russell-Whittaker (3's), Anna Simmons (nee Tingle 1's), Katy Simmons (now Dr Katy Rice 5's), Jane Rennie (nee Parker 1's) and Valerie King (5's).

A few photographs have been supplied to us, with which we've started a photo gallery - but it would be great to have more photos to add, so please do send your photographs into the CHA Office

This exhibition continues until the 9th August and is a very personal exhibition that centres on the lives of the girls who attended this school and also to their teachers, who had so much involvement in their lives. Visitors will be able to listen to personal memories of pupils and teachers, see amazing photographs of the school and pupils, together with uniform, memorabilia and other miscellaneous items.

The CHA are keen to have more events for the Hertford Old Girls, so please let us know what sort of events and possible locations you would like to meet up and we can organise that it wont be so long until the next formal event!

Rifle Shooting Cancellation - Old Blues Day

Regretfully we have had to cancel Rifle Shooting on Old Blues Day, this is due to a recent change in legislation in regards to health and safety, which prohibits us using the ammunition without purchasing a new license.

However clay shooting does not fall under this, as they are non-service issue weapons, so we are still able to offer this on Old Blues Day.

If you have already booked Rifle Shooting you will shortly be recieving a refund from the CH Association.

Apologies once again.

"What a fabulous occasion it turned out to be on Saturday and I am only sorry we had to wait 40 years for it!"

"It was lovely meeting those of you that we did and we are now determined to make it to Old Blues' Days more often. I think my last one was about 20 years ago!"

"Very many thanks for organising and hosting such a wonderful event last Saturday. Everything about it was brilliant and it certainly served to awaken the "Old Blue" in me that perhaps I had kept to myself a little too much over the years."

Careers Network – Working Party Request

As part of the Careers Network re-launch we are trying to put together a group of OBs who have experience in the Recruitment, Careers or HR fields who could spare a few hours a month (by telephone, email or in person) to advise us on best practice in terms of offering careers advice and work experience.

The Careers Network is unique in its breadth of industry and professional sources and can offer both Old Blues and current CH pupils,

  • Careers Advice
  • Work Experience
  • Careers Talks
  • Workplace Visits
  • Gap Year placements

The help and advice of Old Blues can be invaluable in inspiring and guiding aspiration with current pupils.

A Visit to ‘The Tube’

Michelle, Samantha and Neil down the Tube

We are able to offer those joining the 10 and 40 year reunions, a trip down the ‘Tube’ which runs for roughly a mile and a half under Christ’s Hospital.

Cream tiles and Health and Safety Compliant pipes

I was fortunate enough for a ‘not so dry-run!’ tour of the Tube by Neil Manning, CH Facilities Manager.

From left to right: Michelle Sutlieff (CHA Manager), Samatha Rider (Development Director), Neil Manning (CH Facilities Manager)

We entered opposite the Counting House, descending down steps into the first part of the tunnel.

The arty shot a circular hole with hexagons cut out possibly with glass in them

The distinctive cream enamel tiling continued most of the way down the Tube, although now the various piping and services are Health & Safety compliant!

This is the arty shot (!) can anyone guess what it is? If you can, email me and let me know!

Plants growing in damp conditions

As you can see, the damp has meant in part of the tunnels we have some unexpected visitors making an appearance !

Graffiti reading 'Joscoe was too scared'

The history of the Tube was still evident in certain parts of the tunnel. I found this particular statement just left of the entrance to Leigh Hunt – who was Joscoe I wonder?

Many of the off-shoots from the main tunnel have had to have structural props added to make them safe enough to access. As Housey has recently reported the Kitchen has the worst of this and unfortunately that is why we cannot offer trips down the ‘Tube’ for the duration of the kitchen refurbishment.

Props holding up the Tube

There are parts of the Tube where you can still clearly see how ‘child size’ the smaller tunnels are. I’ve heard rumours that these were often used to try and ‘escape’ CH but Neil tells me it was impossible to get further than the Old Swimming Pool – does anyone dare to challenge this claim?

Degradation of the Tube structure

The only disappointment of the visit was that Ozzy the ghost failed to make an appearance!

As soon was the Kitchen works are completed we will ensure that we organise further trips down the Tube.

Anyone with any stories involving this historic piece of CH architecture, do let me know via email.

Notice: 'The Old Blue'

The CHA would like to apologise for the late posting of 'The Old Blue'. Within the publication you will find details of the forthcoming Old Blues Day, which as ever has a wealth of events to attend. Any comments, ideas or thoughts on the publication, as ever, are always welcome on the contact details below.

Hertford Museum

‘Forgotten Blues’ an exhibition about Christ’s Hospital School at Hertford, 19th March - 9th AugustThis exhibition on the ground floor tells the story of the school that existed in Hertford for over 300 years. The exhibition illustrates the development of the school, from its early origins in 1552 in London, to the eventual move to the home counties and in particular – to Hertford in the late 17th century – which eventually became the home of the girl’s school.

This is a very personal exhibition that centres on the lives of the girls who attended this school and also to their teachers, who had so much involvement in their lives. Visitors will be able to listen to personal memories of pupils and teachers, see amazing photographs of the school and pupils, together with uniform, memorabilia and other miscellaneous items.

Miss Elizabeth Tucker who was headmistress at the school for 10 years, will be giving a slide show and talk at the museum on Thursday 3rd of April at 8pm on the first floor. Tickets are available to buy from the museum priced £3 each. All proceeds go to Hertford Museum’s development project.

CH on 'Blue Peter' 5.00 pm Wednesday 9th January BBC One

Blue Peter 5.00 pm Tonight (Wednesday 9th January) BBC One
Repeated 8.30 am Tomorrow (Thursday 10th January) The CBBC Channel

Blue Peter finds out today what it is like to be a boarder at Christ’s Hospital. Filmed last summer (but under wraps until today) presenter Andy Akinwolere spent the day at CH meeting Habon Mohamud and her friends.
The feature item will be shown on Blue Peter tonight (Wednesday, 9th January) on BBC One/CBBC at 5.00 pm, repeated at 8.30 am tomorrow (Thursday, 10th January) on The CBBC Channel.
Thanks to all staff and pupils involved in the making of this film last summer.
Habon says:
“The thing that I enjoyed mostly was being with Andy and crew. The best shoot was the last shot where we had a little game of rounders. Andy was really funny.
“From being involved in filming I learnt that, if you want to become an actress or an actor, it’s a very difficult job, saying the right words at the right time, it’s not easy. But the main thing I learnt is just being yourself and having fun.”

The event was sponsored by LloydsTSB Corporate and guests met pupils over lunch, were entertained with a march past by the band and taken on tours of the site. Cadia members listened to a presentation by the Headmaster who told them that Christ’s Hospital is one of the last truly charitable Schools which supports and educates children from families with social, financial and other needs. Over 97% of the pupils have their educational costs subsidised by the School’s Charitable Foundation and 14% of children’s families pay nothing at all. The School, which is fully boarding, educates up to 850 boys and girls from the age of 11 to 18 with over 25% of children coming from Sussex. The event was an opportunity for the School to highlight its work and its vital need for funding to the local business community. The business community were encouraged to join the recently launched Corporate Donation Governorship Scheme which is a way for business to help the School identify and support individual pupils.

The Sue Thomson Foundation

Administrator required for a charity with close CH connections. This is a new part time post of about fifteen hours a week, based in Henfield, West Sussex BN5, starting around April 2008. It is being created so that the charity's five trustees can give more attention to expanding their charitable work. The Sue Thomson Foundation is an endowed UK registered charity that regularly presents children to CH and supports them through their school careers and beyond. The Foundation also supports CH in other ways and gives modest grants to a limited number of other charities, usually for education and welfare. The post holder will be the sole administrative employee so the job will involve all aspects of the Foundation's work and there will be plenty of scope for taking on increasing responsibility over time. Relevant skills and previous administrative experience are required. For a job description, background information about the Foundation and an application form please contact Mrs Susan Mitchell, Chairman, The Sue Thomson Foundation, e-mail: susanmitchell@macdream.net or telephone 01273 493461. Closing date for applications is 29 February 2008 and interviews will be at Henfield in March. The office will be closed from 22 January to 10 February 2008 but all enquiries will receive responses outside those dates.

Old Blues Football Club

Please come along and support the Christ's Hospital 1st XI v Old Blues Football Match Sunday 6th January 2008 - 1pm kick off. Christ's Hospital 1st XI Football Pitch (behind Grecians West). The season's opener is only a few weeks away and CH pupils and staff are looking forward to the new season and more than 120 hard fought fixtures, including two new fixtures against schools from outside the county.

Etta Harris update

A request was sent out with the December newsletter asking if anyone knew anything about the plaque commemorating Etta Harris, which was formerly in the Hertford chapel. As a result of the notice, the plaque has now been found and is in good order. Thank you to all those who responded to the request for information.
