My thoughts and prayers, and those of my family, are very much with all of Rob’s family and friends; we were so shocked to hear of the loss of such a very fine young man. We trust that his life and example will continue to inspire.

Rob, I didn`t have the pleasure of knowing you, but my son was two years below you at CH. Clearly a strong minded, motivated, determined, enthusiastic high achieving young man with such energy, passion and zest for life - qualities to be so admired. I hope CH pupils will always be inspired by you and your wonderful achievements. I feel such great sadness and send my deep felt sympathy to your family, your girlfriend and all your friends.

You always made me laugh so much Rob. From trying to eat an entire chicken carcass on the Norfolk Broads to shouting `Hang onto that Eurohike!` in the Lakes when it was pouring down in camp and we`d all nearly gone to sleep. You truly deserved that title of Super Scout. I was so glad to see you in October. My thoughts are with all your family and Lucinda. I hope you enjoy climbing those clouds in the sky with Mr Kemp. xx

I remember the day at boarding school when a young Rob and James approached me, asking if I would lend them the remainder of the money they needed for their Spantik expedition, in preparation for Everest. I knew I was dealing with two highly motivated individuals prepared to consider anything in order to achieve their goals, and didn`t have to think twice in lending them the money they needed. I had known Rob through cycling, and it was obvious how motivated a person he was from day one. There are not many people who can boast of Rob`s achievements in their lifetime, and I feel privileged to have known such a special person.

A real privilege to have known Rob. What he did in his too short life has already inspired so many young people to believe they can achieve things they never thought possible - this will be a real continuing legacy which we can all be grateful for. All our thoughts are with Tim and the rest of the family at this time.

If a life is not measured in years, but rather in friendships, love, challenges and adventure, then Rob has lived so well and so fully. I have such clear and lovely memories of Rob, James H, my son Bart and all those other boys in Maine B on their first day at school in `98. My deepest condolences to his family and closest friends. It was a real pleasure to know Rob. I remember being blown away when he and James H. did a fantastic evening lecture about their expeditions and future Everest plans in the school theatre in ca.2004. The enthusiasm was so great and the ambition so genuine that even some Sherpas had come all the way from Nepal for the presentation! In his short life he made us all so proud and showed the world what human beings are capable of with a bit of determination, perseverance and positive thinking. My thoughts and condolences go to all his loved ones and I hope that a small amount of comfort can come from the fact that he touched so many lives.

Rob, you were always so busy that it took ages to catch up with you, but when you sent news, it was always worth waiting for. I felt sure we would meet one day, rather than just by e-mail, but it will not be. My loss, as I am sure that, despite the generation difference, you would have been fun to meet. My condolences to your family.

I remember seeing the Everest photo for the first time, with the CH flag held so proudly - what an incredible achievement.
I only spoke to Rob once, when he was fund-raising - but his passion and enthusiasm was infectious - what a fantastic guy.

I have many fond memories of Rob during our school days. Some from our Juniors, his awesome parties but in particular is when he and my dear friend Lucinda became a couple. I always knew they liked each other and I took it upon myself to play the role of cupid in getting them together at one of our school discos, and to this day I am still so pleased it worked!! I couldn`t have asked for a better boyfriend for Lucie. What I admire most about Rob was how extremely humble he was after everything he accomplished. He was a true gentleman and I am very proud to have known him and to tell all who haven`t met him how fantastic he really was. I will continue to reminisce with my friends from C.H on the memories we all have of our time spent with Rob and reflect on his amazing life. I also send my condolences to the Gauntlett family and hope that they may find solace in the joy that he has given all of us. God bless.

It has been said that it is not the years in your life that count, it`s the life in your years. Rob clearly had so much more to give, however what he accomplished in curtailed time, and the manner in which he did it, will forever make him an example to us all. A true inspiration. A devastating loss. My love and strength to his family and Lucinda xxx

We were privileged to have both Rob and James come to talk to our Sixth Form about their adventures. James came after the Everest expedition and the Rob in November to speak about their Pole to Pole adventure. Both were inspirational and kept the rapt attention of their audiences. Students and staff alike who met Rob on that occasion were shocked to hear of his death over the weekend. Our deepest sympathies go to his familty and friends.

From the moment you arrived at CH you always had a love for life, and a determination to do and to experience. You were always so motivated, so ambitious, and so happy to be pushing yourself that it impressed and inspired those around you. May your legacy engender those same feelings in others, as I`m sure that would be a fitting goodbye. You will be sorely missed by all of us, and our thoughts are with your family at this time of hardship. Rest in peace.

Legend is a word overused in the 21st century, however Rob you were a true legend in every sense of the word. Your enthusiasm, spirit, drive, determination and ambition knew no bounds and everything you achieved in your lifetime far outstretches most people`s greatest achievements. You will never be forgotten amongst friends, family and Old Blues and may you rest in peace.

A few months ago, Rob gave a fascinating talk about his incredible experiences to a large group of our sixth formers. It was amazing to see the effect that he had on every member of the audience. When listening to him speak, it was clear how much he loved every moment of his journey and how he wanted others to follow in his footsteps and live life to the full. Many people commented on how he inspired them to follow their ambitions and believe in his motto “impossible is nothing”. It is terrible to have lost someone who showed such vigour for life and had the potential to do so many more great things, but his example will live on.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Rob Gauntlett`s tragic death in the Fench Alps. What a privilege it was to hear Rob and James and to chat with them at the CSB lunch. I honestly came away feeling a better person. What an example to us all he set! Tragic that Rob`s life was so short but truly wonderful how much he had packed into it. For this we must be truly grateful. He gave so much, and in the end gave his life. I shall remember him with sadness and deep gratitude.

Rob, you really are an inspiration. I can relate to your love of adventure and the great outdoors and it is a shame there aren`t more like you in the world today. But having said that the talks you`ve been giving around the world with Hooper seem to have instilled a dose of passion and adventure into virtually everyone you have met, so it seems you`ve done your best to share your incredible determination and message to `follow your dreams`! My fond memories of you and your inspirational life will never be forgotten. Much love, Louise xx

Rob, I knew you all through our time at CH, and the longer it went on, the more of a pleasure it became. I barely knew Rob at school but was always overcome by his dominating sense of direction and confidence, something i could not accept at the age of 15 but more than appreciate as a rare and special trait in a person today. it is a pleasure to know that before his untimely passing he managed to dominate the world in the same way.

I delighted in your fascination with all things in Scouts - and Geography: up to the elbows in daub at Singleton, gybing round in circles at Salhouse, jumping on every patch of snow on your first Lakes trip, being voted SuperScout at Barnswood. I admired every step of your journeys up Everest and Pole to Pole and was proud to get e-mails direct to me from the Antarctic. I was moved almost beyond bearing by your presentation to the Scottish Old Blues last October. I enjoyed sharing ideas with you on the long Land Rover journey. I was looking forward to seeng you again in January 27th up here: our party will still go ahead. Your spirit will live on in our memories and in what we can do to perpetuate your vision of `living your dreams`.

Rob, I cannot put into words the part you played in my life. Having you there throughout the most difficult times in our lives was something I couldn’t have done without. I remember the day when we both found out we had got into CH and I was so happy we would be tackling it together. Over the past few years you have shared your talent with the world in such a way that has made us all so proud. I always knew you were destined for big things and you can’t get bigger than Everest. One day I’m sure I will see that cheeky smile again. Rest in Peace.

Rob, you have been an inspiration to all who knew you and to many who never had the privilege of meeting you in person. Your incredible legacy will live on through your achievements and in the hearts of all who you inspired with your sense of adventure, compassion and genuine decency. A life lived all too briefly but with a brightness that will sear it in the memories of all at your school and in the wider world. We were lucky to have you. Go peacefully.

Rob, I remember meeting you at scouts when we first started at CH. Remember the atticus jokes on our D of E in the lakes? And the malt loaf mountain? You impressed me with your lust for life and your conviction in carrying out your dreams. You always lived life to the full, never wasting a minute. You`ve been such an inspiration, I am so sad that your life was cut tragically short. I will miss you x

Dear Rob, you were always so pleased to see me, even the very first time we met after your Spantik talk in the Riches Lecture Theatre in my first few weeks (back) at school. I loved your simple enthusiasm for life and adventure - the important things! I loved your thoughtful kindness. You could make a person feel special just by being around and we are poorer without you. My thoughts are with all your family and the many, many people who loved you. Adventure well.

Rob Gauntlett, you were an inspiration to all, have captured the hearts of many and have shown to everyone that dreams can be achieved. You have achieved much in your short but sweet life and for that your family can be proud. You will be missed greatly by many but remembered fondly in everyone`s hearts. God bless and Rest In Peace.

Many condolences to the Gauntlett family from the Beringer family. Your son`s adventurous spirit and drive meant that others too could share in his dreams, including my brother Charlie on their Pole to Pole experience. Thank you Rob, for being someone who inspired others to challenge themselves and experience new adventures. May your spirit live on in those who will continue to be inspired by your intrepid nature. Many condolences also to the Atkinson family. Strength to you all at this time.

To the parents and family of Rob and James. Our heartfelt condolences on your great loss. I did not know James, but it takes courage, determination and a huge zest for life to climb such mountains. Rob came to the Amicables and spoke after his Everest conquest. He was extraordinarily modest and understated about his astonishing achievement; a true Brit in the greatest sense of the word. Who knows what he might have gone on to do; but what a tremendous amount he lived in his all too brief time. Our thoughts are with you.

Rob and James Hooper approached us in 2006 to sponsor the Everest expedition and we followed their progress with mounting excitement. Following the expedition I received these words from Rob `In the process of the expedition and the build up, we have been campaigning to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a charity very close to our hearts. So far, we have raised nearly £10,000- and it is constantly growing. We hope to raise a lot more funds through motivational talks and public appearances. Another of our objectives, is to visit schools and to inspire young people to follow their dreams.` I was later privileged to meet and congratulate Rob and James. Together with the other Directors and staff of Carpenter Box LLP I want to send my deepest condolences to Rob`s family and friends on this terrible tragedy.

We were all deeply shocked to hear the news yesterday. We are proud to have known you. You will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Whilst most adults talked about the passions in which you believed, you got on and did something about them - and how! Inspiring your generation, pursuing one`s goals no matter how impossible, and damage to the environment. You have made a difference to those issues; and your School`s historic mission about which you felt so strongly; to all of us and to many children and adults around the World. (Dave, Nicky parents), Lucinda and all the family, grief and sadness is with us all. If you can take heart, just read the messages of sympathy from around the World; Rob unselfishly achieved so much - a young man without paralell. Mike Simpkin

Your messages as you journeyed from Pole to Pole were inspirational, but only when you agreed to come to Truro did I fully understand the enormous impact you were having on a whole generation of young people. Focused and fearless you certainly were, but your qualities of understanding, good humour and humility created an immediate bond with Cornish youngsters that has, no doubt, been widely mirrored elsewhere. Your unprompted offer to speak to Cornish Old Blues in the summer of this year cannot now be fulfilled; nor can we now sail together as we had hoped. The loss to us all is heavy, but you achieved so much in such a short lifespan, and for that we must all rejoice. May God be with your family as they grieve – are thoughts and prayers must now turn to them.
