WIVES AND HUSBANDS

SUBSCRIPTIONS
Once again it is time to ask for your £10 annual subscription. A number of the members pay by standing order and if anybody else would like to do so please ask me for a form. We still have a number of members who forget to pay their subscriptions and never reply to this letter. If I do not hear from you for several years I may have to drop you from the mailing list! It would be appreciated if those forgetful ones would send in double with this year’s subscription. The money from subscriptions and the wine sweeps, pay for entry into The Grafton Morrish, stationary, stamps, photocopying, subsidising the under 28 year old golfers.
Please could you all pay for events well before the day and be aware that late cancellations increasingly have to be paid for in full. Also, if we drop in number, we may also have to pay more.
My thanks go to Julian Cox for his excellent captaincy and we welcome Donald Payne as Captain for 2008.
Finally, please do not hesitate to make suggestions about the running of your society. If you wish to play one of the rounds with a particular friend or share a buggy with them, or have an early or late Tee Time, write it on your form and I will try to accommodate you. I realize that you may see old friends infrequently and that this is an ideal way to catch up with them. Also please try and recruit new members and chase up the lapsed ones. It is your society!
I wish you all wonderful golfing in 2008
Yours sincerely
Rosemary Adkins (Hon. Secretary)

Historical
Regrettably we know little about the past of the Society. The earliest document we have is the 1934 edition of the "Rules and List of Officers and Members". The rules are admirably concise, running to just 93 words. The subscriptions were included therein at five shillings per annum or three guineas for a Life Membership, those being the days when values did not change greatly from year to year. Of the 40 Members listed 11 played to single figures and that is a ratio we cannot match now.
All activity ceased during the War but in 1948 George Ross-Goobey was much involved in an effort to bring about a revival. Indeed, we went as far as entering a Team for the Halford Hewitt tournament but our two star players dropped out at the last minute and replacements simply were not available so the Old Etonians had a walkover. It seems that in the next five years only two meetings were held with very limited attendance and it was not until 1984 that a successful revival was achieved.
David Gibbs was the main mover and was made Captain with Mervyn Yewe-Dyer as Hon. Secretary. 16 players attended the first meeting at Mannings Heath on 9th.May 1984. Spring and Autumn meetings were started in 1985 and this has continued to the present day.
A record book has been kept since 1987 detailing all the activities of the Society since that time.
