Cornwall and Devon Old Blues

22nd March 2011

Dear Fellow Old Blue

Replies received so far are in favour of a summer meet in Flushing. The date will be Sunday, 17th July when a number of Young Old Blues should be present at the start of their sailing adventure. Margaret Wadman (CHOBA administrator) hopes to be present and John Franklin (Head Master) will be invited, though clearly his schedule is such that we cannot guarantee his acceptance.

If you hope to attend, it is important that I know this as soon as possible as, depending on numbers, it may be necessary to book the Sailing Club as we did last time. Flushing is a gorgeous summer venue; do bring your family for a day out - there is safe swimming from the beach below my house (HW approx 7.30 - neap tides) and, if you arrive early or want a little exercise afterwards, a lovely walk around Trefusis Point to St Mylor Church.

Cost for lunch will be in the region of £15-£20 (hopefully including wine or other liquid refreshment - £10 for any in full-time education). I do hope as many of you as possible will be able to join us on that day.

Old Blues Day is on 30th April. I have three seats left in my car, and will be driving up from Cornwall to Horsham on the afternoon of April 29th along the South Coast route from Exeter onwards (A35 via Dorchester) and returning from CH the following day leaving there at approximately 4:30pm. At the time of writing, the Horsham Travelodge still has rooms at £19 for the night of the 29th, but I do not expect this to last much longer.

Best Wishes

After years of ably looking after our interests, Roff Rayner has passed the baton on to me. As you know there are big changes afoot as the CH Club itself becomes merged into a wider Association, so perhaps now is a good time to take stock of our situation.

Those of us fortunate enough to live west of the Tamar may feel that our distance from Housey is itself a good reason to maintain a significant presence in Cornwall. However, this can only work if there is sufficient interest to make it worthwhile.

Accordingly, I would be most grateful if you would be kind enough to let me have your views.

Founder’s Day Lunch – Sunday, November 26th 2006 – Lakeview Country Club, Nr Bodmin

Following lunch, James Hooper gave a presentation. James is a very young Old Blue and the youngest Briton to climb Everest. He planned the expedition when he was meant to be doing his prep in the school library while in his LE year. James has already given talks and presentations all over the UK, as well as in South Africa and he is now touring the USA speaking to many different audiences, so…

The lunch was held under the auspices of the Christ’s Hospital Cruising and Sailing Club and Professor David Taplin, Commodore, was in the Chair.
